‘UDAN LIRIS’ a new and surprising solo exhibition by Sri Irodikromo

12/11/2021 - 04/12/2021

It is our pleasure to invite you to a special solo exhibition of visual artist Sri Irodikromo in Readytex Art Gallery. On November 12th we present Udan Liris, an exhibition in which this versatile artist reveals work in a more earthy, intuitive and organic visual language, guided by a strong fascination with natural materials and a deeper engagement with the history of her paternal ancestors.

This exhibition is the second art manifestation within the year-long project ALAKONDRE: A space in time, under the direction of Curator-in-Residence and artist Miguel Keerveld, who also enables other artists to take on the curatorship role. The lead curator for Udan Liris is colleague-artist Kurt Nahar. Through his involvement and insights, viewers are guaranteed a unique and exciting presentation of the new art collection of Sri Irodikromo.

For this exhibition, Sri delves more and deeper than ever into the history and the culture of her Javanese heritage. Her urge to intensify her research and increasingly incorporate the culture of her ancestors from her father’s side into her art, has gradually become more visible in recent times. And although this personal theme is even more prominent in her new collection, she portrays it in a much more subdued color palette and in a style that tilts more towards abstraction and a freer form of expression.

But what makes her work particularly surprising, are her research into and her experiments with, new and organic materials. It is indeed the use of these materials, among which especially coffee, but also turmeric, bluing (laundry blue), charcoal, wax, ‘pemba’ and strips of black cotton, that so aptly brings to light the historical and the spiritual bond with her ancestors. Sri takes information and elements from her history and gradually brings them – layer upon layer, either strongly diluted or thicker, sometimes deliberately but mostly intuitively and experimentally – to life in her work. Warm earthy hues, translucent images, batik stamps, subtle line drawings, bold stitching, and also old rusty nails and wire, they all contribute to the layering of material, but also to the layering in associations and feelings that the work portrays and evokes.

With her new collection Sri Irodikromo appears to be entering a new path in her artistic career. A path that reveals a very personal direction and depth. The result of an almost inevitable development that has come over her gradually, gently, yet persistently and thoroughly, like Udan Liris… soft rain.

We gladly invite you to visit Udan Liris from Friday November 12th until Saturday December 4th, during our regular opening hours from Monday – Friday from 8:00 am – 4:30 pm, and on Saturday from 8:30 am – 1:30 pm. In accordance of course, with the Covid-measures.

You are most welcome!
