Sri Irodikromo

“I incorporate cultural elements and symbols from Suriname’s diverse cultures and also multiple art techniques such as batik, stenciling and embroidery.”

Sri Irodikromo, daughter of famous Surinamese artist Soeki Irodikromo, grew up in an environment where painting, ceramics and traditional Javanese batik were daily activities. In 1989 she started her education at the Nola Hatterman Art Academy in Suriname. In 1994 she continued her education in The Hague, the Netherlands at the ‘Vrije Academie’ and specialized in graphical art techniques.

In 2005 she returns to Suriname and receives new impulses from its multicultural society. She is involved in several art projects, gives workshops in various art techniques, and creates intricately detailed and colorful artwork. She is skilled in painting, ceramics, batik and several other art techniques and is greatly inspired by the patterns, the symbols and the people from the various cultures represented in Suriname. Women in traditional clothing are also a recurring theme. In 2006 she wins first prize at The Living art show in Suriname. Her work is featured in many exhibitions and her first solo in 2008 is a large success. Her paintings, as well as the large-scale batik artworks that she is fond of making, are featured in important exhibitions in Suriname and abroad.

Sri also teaches Batik at the ‘Soeki Irodikromo Volksacademie voor Kunst en Cultuur’, Paramaribo. In 2018 she traveled to Indonesia with her father and her siblings, and took new inspiration from the cultural and artistic wealth she encountered in the country of her ancestors.
