“The woman artist Installation”.

Kit-Ling Tjon Pian Gi

Five brightly colored paintings, with women clearly as main theme, surround a strikingly framed television screen on which a video presentation shows the process the artists work goes through before the final result is achieved.

Originally designed for, and first exhibited on the 2007 National Art Fair in Suriname, this lively multi-media art installation by artist Kit-Ling Tjon Pian Gie is now displayed in the main hall of the Readytex Art Gallery.

This is not the first time that Kit-Ling uses women as the main theme in her art. Women have long since been a great source of inspiration for the artist but whereas in the past the feminine expression of pure authentic cultural elements was her main focus, the woman’s role in her art has now taken new direction. Nowadays it is the mix of different cultures into one hybrid culture that she admires most, but at the same time, the urge to concentrate on cultural aspects in her art has greatly diminished.

Based on this gradual change in perception the artist at one point decided to evaluate and re-evaluate her art and her own role as an artist. The result was a new artistic direction centered on that which is universal, on the inner source of inspiration which drives each human being, and specifically each woman, from the inside out. The inner strength of the woman is currently the main theme in the art of Kit-Ling Tjon Pian Gie and this is also what the installation “The Woman Artist” is all about.

In one respect, specifically in the painting where the poets Slory and Srinivasi are clearly recognizable, the installation illustrates the established order of popular, generally known male artists, while on the other hand, in the other paintings, it clearly focuses on the “woman artist” drawing upon her inner strength and inherent creativity in order to make her own mark upon society. The bright lively colors and intricate details can easily be interpreted as a reflection of the positive disposition and optimistic character which are often immediate results of the inner strength of the woman.

The purpose of the video presentation is to give the viewers an idea of the creative process which precedes the completed work of art. For Kit-Ling each painting comes to life through first a concept, then a sketch, and subsequently a process in which the interaction between emotion and sound judgment, intuition and intelligence, determine the final result.

For practical reasons and personal health, the artist currently chooses for acrylic instead of oil paints but the choice of color is not deliberate. The bright color palette which Kit-Ling works with is totally intuitive and according to the artist, probably a subconscious reflection of her mood at that particular time.
