On May 31st Readytex Art Gallery will open her second large solo exhibition for this year in De Hal at the Grote Combé. In this exhibition visual artist Reinier Asmoredjo will present his latest art collection to the public. The title he chooses for the exhibition is Spirits of the Sun and quite appropriately so, for the sun is indeed the main theme in the new creations for his new solo show. The signature style of Asmoredjo is clearly present in the new collection. As we have come to expect from Asmoredjo, a cheerful and bright color pallette, a positive symbolism of women, birds and flowers once again characterize the work. Then of course there is also the sun which always plays an important role in Asmoredjo’s paintings, but this time around the sun most definitely takes center stage. The sun, to Asmoredjo, is a source of strength and positive energy and in his work it often symbolizes, also because of its circular shape, the continuous cycle of life. Asmoredjo has a positive look on life and that clearly manifests itself in his art as well. “People tend to complain so much about the sun. If it’s not too hot, then it’s too bright. I want to stress the positive aspects of the sun. The warmth, the strength and the energy it gives us to work towards a better future, that’s what is most important to me!” The compositions put together by Asmoredjo are always quite striking! Carefully thought out combinations of figurative images with abstract shapes and graceful details, ensure that each work holds an undeniable appeal. Because of the bright colors, the Surinamese inspired imagery and naturally also the sun that shines through it all, the collection also has a lively tropical feel to it. But a significant part of the work also has a sensual quality. Strong feminine profiles, full red lips and abundantly shaped breasts certainly have a lot to do with that. The specific images can vary from a beautifully dressed up kotomisi, to a dancing maroon woman, a graceful Javanese beauty, faces full of character and seductive nudes. Flowers, fruit, birds and round breasts, the symbols for beauty, freedom and fertility are certainly not lacking, but in a rather new development, the beautiful tropical macaw is now also shown off on Asmoredjo’s canvas. Asmoredjo does keep experimenting. This is evident in a number of paintings in which the compositions are more abstract and minimalistic. Geometric shapes and Lines, supplemented only by one or two typical female facial profiles with their hair depicted in abstract horizontal lines, are portrayed against a simple background. In Spirits of the Sun the artist presents paintings on canvas and on paper, a beautiful collection of painted glass vases and several painted wooden blocks. During the exhibition, on Thursday June 2nd to be exact, Asmoredjo will show the public how each of his ideas and compositions is first developed on paper. The artist possesses numerous folders in which he has filed all his sketches. They offer a fascinating and surprising look into the development of the work and theme throughout the artist’s career. This will be the first time that Asmoredjo shows his collection of sketches, which are in fact full-fledged Works of art all by themselves, to a larger public. On Saturday June 4th there will be a festive finissage with live music. The last day of the exhibition is Sunday June 5th.
