With a beautiful, new series of batik art, titled “Harvesting Hope: Resilient Women of Suriname”, Sri Irodikromo pays tribute to Surinamese women who, as small entrepreneurs, support their families and communities by selling their own agricultural and artisanal products on the market. This way of surviving has a long tradition and in large, colorful batik cloths with striking images of these women, Sri celebrates their power and resilience.
Together with a number of passionate batik practitioners, who assisted in the creation of the works, artist Sri forms the Batik Su collective. With proceeds from the sale, they will fund a study trip to Indonesia, during which they will meet batik masters, study batik workshops and network with scientists affiliated with the institute where the late Soeki Irodikromo, Sri’s father and celebrated artist in Suriname, studied batik. Batik Su will use this exchange of knowledge and experience for the further development of batik art in Suriname.
After being displayed at the Srefidensi reception of the Embassy of Suriname in Guyana, which was attended by diplomatic and business representatives from different countries, “Harvesting Hope: Resilient Women of Suriname” is now on display on the first floor of Readytex Art Gallery until January 4, 2025 during our regular opening hours.
You and your guests are very welcome!
