For this exhibition Shaundell Horton creates a self-portrait. She paints herself realistically, but the image is created primarily for the purpose of self-reflection. She does indeed add certain elements that reveal a bit more about her background. Used teabags and doilies that refer to her (British-) Guyanese heritage are – as is customary in her work – also part thereof. But here she painted the doily over her face like a partial shadow to thus convey that extra layer of her identity. The shadow also refers to the subconscious and how we deal with it. To the things that we ourselves don’t have much influence on, but which were perhaps passed on to us by our ancestors, our upbringing, or our environment. In the background Shaundell paints a slightly more abstract image of a landscape. It represents the place where she was born: Guyana, and also the place that she has turned into her home: Suriname. All elements that have made her into the person she is today and which are of influence to her artistry.
