Thursday-night-feature September 8th: Kurt
Nahar talks about his residency at the Joan Mitchell Center in New Orleans,
USA.
The upcoming Thursday-night-feature (TNF) of Readytex
Art Gallery has, per exception, been moved from the first to the second
Thursday of the month, to the 8th of September. On this evening visual artist
Kurt Nahar talks about his recent experience as artist-in-residence (AiR) at
the Joan Mitchel Center In New Orleans. Kurt Nahar was the first international
artist-in-residence at this center that offers a space for creative development
to many American artists each year. Rosie Gordon-Wallace from Diaspora Vibe
Cultural Art Incubator (DVCAI) in Miami, who is following Kurt Nahar for many
years now, was the initiator for this residency.
Nahar’s residency at the Joan Mitchell Center ran from
July 11th until August 5th. With the support of Readytex
Art Gallery in Suriname and Rosie Gordon-Wallace of Diaspora Vibe Cultural Art
Incubator (DVCAI) in Miami, the artist prepared for his trip and the project he
would do during his AiR. In New Orleans he would focus on the worldwide refugee
crisis, including the crisis in New Orleans whereby countless residents from
that area had to flee their homes after hurricane Katrina. What is interesting
to note then, is how after several days in the USA, the artist becomes so
intrigued by a different subject that he completely changes the theme of his
residency project. His new theme is based on a subject that is playing out
quite prominently in present-day American society: the subject of police
brutality and the resulting ‘black lives matter’ movement.
During Kurt Nahar’s presentation at the Thursday-night-feature
of Readytex Art Gallery on September 8th, guests will have the
opportunity to hear and see more about his residency in New Orleans, about the
days thereafter at the DVCAI in Miami, and about the art he created in the USA.
Some of his new art works will be displayed in the gallery. Make sure not to
miss this fascinating exhibition! Please join us in the gallery on Thursday
September 8th from 7:00 until 9:00 pm. The presentation of Kurt
Nahar starts at 7:30 pm. Team Readytex Art Gallery
