Kibii Wi Koni Marcel Pinas The Event (March –October 2011) Marcel Pinas conveys a clear message through his art: ‘kibri a kulturu’ and deeper still: ‘kibii wi koni’. Preserve the culture and preserve the knowledge/the wisdom. The culture and the knowledge of the maroons are the main theme in all the creations and all the endeavors of Marcel Pinas. Pinas who is himself a descendent from the N’Djuka community of the district of Marowijne has been showing off his pride for his own culture through art for many years now. By doing so he hopes to raise a consciousness amongst fellow maroons, the entire Surinamese community and the whole world about the important role that cultural appreciation, a true regard for that which is your own, plays in the shaping of the pers onal identity of each person. In his case this regards the culture of the maroons, but his message is Universal. His dream, his mission and all his life’s work is directed towards a noble and much larger goal. He is completely dedicated to bringing positive change to the district of Marowijne and with his Kibii Foundation he is already making it happen. Through the TAS (Tembe Art Studio) in Moengo he offers opportunities for growth and development to people from local communities, especially the youth. Through education in a broad field of the arts and an ambitious international artist residency program, he is bringing about community development and inspiring hope for a better future. On June 21st a ground breaking exhibition, the first in a series of art exhibitions within the framework of the large-scale art event Kibii Wi Koni Marcel Pinas The Event, will open in the KKF.
